Chicken or egg: Does a business operate better when it sponsors a healthy, motivated team, or does a superior business model attract healthy and motivated people? Either way, the stats are in, and looking good: When a business has energetic team members, everyone wins. That’s one reason why we at SAGE* recently joined the Global Corporate Challenge (GCC), a worldwide work health and wellness program designed to kick our booties and our brains into higher gear.
How It Works
As described on GCC’s GetTheWorldMoving website, the program “offers an effective balance of motivation, inspiration, support and education which has engaged and empowered over 950,000 people from 105 countries to change their lives.”
Seven of those 950,000 participants are three of us at SAGE* and four of our family members. Together, we’re team SAGE Strong*. When we signed up, we each received two GCC Pulse devices – fancy little gadgets that track our every activity. We’re participating in a 16-week program that began in May, during which we “compete” against teams from all around the world. The program also includes a full year of ongoing initiatives, individual challenges and additional support to help us maintain the competitive jumpstart.
How It’s Going
It’s day 15 and as I write, so far, so good. When I log into my account, I can see I’ve met or exceeded my target every day, and experienced my “personal best” day yesterday, at more than 15,000 steps. Overall, I’ve walked or quick-stepped (I can’t quite say “ran”) nearly 67 miles. My daily average is on par with worldwide participant stats, and I’m a smidge ahead of the team average. Our team has now travelled virtually to Machu Picchu, Peru, also known as ‘The Lost City of the Incas”. So not only am I getting fit, I am (re)learning my geography!
Did You Know?
One of the world’s most famous walks ‘The Inca Trail” ends here at Machu Picchu. The classic walk is a five day trek through the Andean Mountains, Inca ruins and an ancient staircase made up of 1500 steps which would…er…add 1500 steps to your daily total!
Besides being good for me and my own energy levels, SAGE Strong has been another effective way to generate team synergy here. Mostly Type A personalities, we’ve been holding ourselves accountable to each other and to our own daily logging and tracking. If the data holds true, it should contribute to our firm’s bottom line as well. The GCC reports: “Industry research has consistently shown that employee engagement has a profoundly positive effect on an organisation’s business performance and that highly-engaged workplaces typically outperform those with low-level engagement across a whole range of metrics including workforce retention, absenteeism, collaboration, innovation and overall productivity levels.”
Now, if I could just find a solution for those 3 p.m. snack cravings.
